On Wednesday, August 31, the “Keio SDGs Conference: 2022 Summer Camp” was held on Hiyoshi Campus. This event brought together Keio students ranging from those in elementary school to those in university programs to allow participants to consider and discuss potential ways for Keio to work towards objectives and targets meant to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Currently, Keio is in the midst of holding its “2022 Keio SDGs Student Conference” where selected student representatives from across its undergraduate faculties deliberate on Keio’s overall vision, objectives, and specific targets for realizing the SDGs. In the Spring Semester, participating students attended lectures by experts on topics related to SDGs to deepen their understanding of current events and how they concern Japan and the rest of the world. For the Fall Semester, the goal is for these students to divide into subcommittees for further discussions and submit their final proposals to Keio’s president about how they think the Keio as an organization should approach these issues moving forward.
The Summer Camp was a specially designed program which recruited students participating in the Student Conference as well as current Keio students and pre-college students from 10 of Keio’s affiliated schools who expressed interest in this initiative. In total there were approximately 200 students who participated in the event in order to discuss ways that Keio can align with its declared 17 SDGs.
During the camp, President Kohei Itoh, Professor Norichika Kanie and Project Professor Hiroko Kuniya listened to the student presentations and provided feedback on their work. Professor Kanie and Project Professor Kuniya both work with the Graduate School of Media and Governance and have served as general supervisors for the Student Conference. Throughout the event, participants of all ages could be seen in active discussions about what kind of future they hope to see and what issues need to be resolved to achieve it.
The ideas brought up throughout the Summer Camp will be used within the Student Conference and incorporated into the final proposals to the president’s office.
